Random Fact Round-Up: Summer Edition

I had a lot of fun finding and pulling together random facts for spring in 2023. I told you then that I would bring this back again I just wasn’t sure when. Well, here we are. I’m not going to bore you with lots of chatter because you are here for random facts to share with friends when you are bored. So let’s get to it:

  1. In the southern hemisphere, summer runs from December to February.
  2. Summer solstice is the longest day of the year (not sure why I didn’t know this was a thing).
  3. Summer is the most popular time for weddings.
  4. The Eiffel Tower is sometimes a few inches taller in the summer because the Iron expands in the heat.
  5. Watermelon is one of the top fruits of summer and there are about 300 kinds!
  6. Speaking of Watermelon, supposedly Americans each eat about 15 lbs of watermelon each summer (those of us who like it anyway)
  7. There is a hot dog that you can buy in California for $145.49. It’s called the Capitol Dawg.
  8. The first air conditioner was made in 1902 (thank goodness for that).
  9. The longest BBQ ever went on for 80 hours.
  10. Throwing frisbees became a game in the late 1800’s but they used pie plates.
  11. It is possible to fry and egg on the sidewalk (ask me how I know this)
  12. Americans consume 7 BILLION hotdogs between Memorial Day and Labor Day (I won’t tell you how many I’ve contributed to that number).
  13. July is national ice cream month (so eat it all up)
  14. Speaking of ice cream, the largest scoop of ice cream ever, weighed 3,000 lbs.
  15. One more ice cream fact. There are 12 different kinds of ice cream and more than 1,000 flavors around the world.
  16. The largest pool float ever was just over 70 feet tall. It was a swan.
  17. The warmest days of the year in the U.S. occur typically during July 15th and July 31st.
  18. Fruit is way cheaper in the summer (which I didn’t realize until I had to start paying for my own food, sorry mom).
  19. An 11 year old accidentally invented popsicles in 1905.
  20. According to scientists, August is the best time for stargazing.

What did I miss? There were a few obvious ones that I skipped, but I know that there are probably some cool ones that I missed too. Be sure to drop them in the comments so that we can enjoy them together. Thanks again for reading. I hope that you are already having the best summer and eating all the ice cream you can.
